A Research Director divides their time among the following responsibilities: published research (text and presentations), client inquiry (including research to answer inquiries), in-the-field sales and client support, and administration. Research Directors may emphasize certain activities over others, but a good Research Director excels in all areas. Exceptional writing, impactful analytic, public speaking, and group dynamics skills are required. A Research Director for Privacy in the Digital Workplace will advise clients on how to deploy information technology in a way that is in line with privacy laws worldwide and meets privacy expectations of customers and employees. This will focus on leading edge research in the following areas: Privacy in digital business and privacy in the Internet of Things (especially in the digital workplace) Privacy in operational technology (e.g. smart meters) Privacy in digital marketing (for example in the context of the EU GDPR) The role also requires a thorough understanding of the following elements of a privacy program. Privacy impact assessments, privacy audits, privacy policies Privacy governance and privacy benchmarks, including budgets and staffing The role also requires a foundational understanding of technologies that either support or threaten privacy, such as the following: Security technologies, especially data masking, tokenization and encryption, identity management and access control, security monitoring Technologies that enable data residency/sovereignty, for example cloud access security brokers and data protection gateways Human resources management, customer relationship management, mobile devices and cloud computing Candidates with experience in regulations including EU GDPR, DPA, BDSG, HIPAA, FERPA and business processes such as marketing, and human resources will be at an advantage. In your new role, you will: Create specified written research in fulfilment of Gartner's commitment to clients (approx. 8 documents per year, a couple of pages each, targeting IT leaders). Research and gather data in support of analysis and position development in all areas related to privacy. Perform research by reading, networking with clients, industry contacts, vendors and analysts, and by evaluating and analyzing information. Participate in research meetings, and conduct interviews, surveys, and reviews of statistical analysis. Create specified written research in fulfilment of Gartner's commitment to clients and as defined in annual job commitments. Respond to 300-400 client inquiries as required per year, providing individualized advice to IT user clients (CIOs, CISOs, privacy officers) or vendor clients (product development and marketing). Define, lead and conduct client audio and video teleconferences. Present at 4-5 multiple Gartner conferences per year as an industry expert. Provide sales support by speaking to prospective and existing clients by telephone and through face-to-face sales calls. Take press calls relevant to research expertise areas to promote the Gartner brand. Research how information, privacy and security technologies and practices are developing and to help clients with their vendor selection process - and assist vendors in overall market positioning Support technology deployments involving personal data for large enterprises, or help vendors shape privacy messaging for their products and services Job Requirements Strong communications skills (verbal and written) are mandatory. 8-12 years’ work experience with at least 4-6 years being in relevant corporate or professional service organizations, solving user problems in IT privacy and security. Experience in privacy in multiple countries, predominantly in Europe, the United States and beyond. Familiarity with the EU’s GDPR and its predecessors. Strong verbal communicator who is able to explain complex concepts both concisely and simply. Basic understanding of market research, data collection and analysis. Being able to work from home yet able to work in a (virtual) team. Working knowledge of German or French are an advantage. Bachelor's degree in related field
